Middletown — Literacy Volunteers of Western Orange County was able to infuse over 20 new tutors into last fall’s programs. More tutors are needed, however, so a spring workshop has been scheduled. The workshop includes a 90-minute orientation, an independent reading assignment, prior to a two-day conference. Orientation will be held at the organization’s office in the Southwinds Retirement Home at 70 Fulton St. in Middletown. Participants may choose between two slots for the orientation session: at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, March 13, or at 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 18. The two-day conference will be held in the Polais Room of Southwinds, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 1, with continental breakfast and lunch provided, and from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, April 2, with lunch provided. The organization works to improve lives through literacy. Adults who understand and speak English are taught to read and write the language. Adult speakers of other languages are taught to understand, speak, read and write English. The first National Assessment of Adult Literacy report in 13 years was completed in 2005, and has been the subject of several newspaper articles lately. Results of the study can be found at nces.ed.gov/naal. To volunteer, call 341-5460 or write to baclvwoc@warwick.net.
