Vigil marks fifth year of standing for peace

Warwick - Members of the Warwick Women in Black held a silent vigil for peace Saturday, Dec. 29, on the corner of South and Main Streets in downtown Warwick. “This is the fifth year we have stood on this corner at the start of a New Year,” said Alice McMechen, one of the coordinators for the group. “We all hope that this year will bring peace to our country and around the world.” When asked what made these women so committed after five long years, Yvonne Dykstra, the youngest of the group, described the group’s resolve this way: “We have a passion for peace.” The other women agreed. “The positive response we get from passersby is encouraging,” added Nancy Varitone. “When I first started walking with Women in black in Monroe five years ago we had a very negative response from some people. Now most people give us peace and thumbs up signs. It’s a very hopeful sign.” During the winter months, Warwick Women in Black will hold a vigil for peace on the last Saturday of each month at 1 p.m., outside Lewis Park. All are welcome.
