Upcoming programs at the Florida Public Library

    Florida - The following is a list and description of upcoming programs for adults, young adults and children at the Florida Public Library. Registration by phone or in-person is required for all programs unless indicated otherwise. Preference is given to residents; a waiting list is available for non-residents. The library is located at 4 Cohen Circle in the village of Florida. Call the library at 651-7659 for information. For adults • Knitting club: Monday, Jan. 14, at 6 p.m. Beginning to expert knitters and crocheters are invited to join the knitting circle. Bring your own yarn and needles and a current project if you have one. Instructions for beginners will be available. Share your tips with other enthusiasts. • Computer lessons: Tuesdays, Jan. 15 and 29, from 10:30-11:30 a.m. Learn how to explore the Web in this beginner’s small class format. This is not a series: Choose one date. Class size is limited • Book club: Thursday, Jan. 24 at 6:30 p.m. Pick up your copy now of Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen and register for the book discussion. • Foreign film series: Sunday, Jan. 27, at 2 p.m., “Into Great Silence” directed by Philip Gröning. Join us on the last Sunday of each month at 2 p.m to watch a critically acclaimed subtitled film on the big screen. Snacks and a beverage will be served . Call to reserve a seat. • Bridge for beginners: Wednesdays, Jan. 30, Feb 6, 13 and 20 from 7-9 p.m. This is a four-week beginner’s course ftaught by Becky Stage. Registration is limited to eight. For young adults (grade 6 and up) • TAG (Teen Advisory Group): Saturday, Jan. 12, at 1 p.m. Enjoy a free pizza lunch and help plan teen programs and purchases for the library. • Graphic novels: Saturday, Jan. 12, at 2 p.m. Explore and discuss the library’s extensive collection of graphic novels. Sign up for TAG and stay for Graphic Novels. • Shaker-style box: Saturday, Jan. 26, at 2 p.m. Decorate an oval Shaker-style box with a variety of finishes. For kids in K-5 • Winter classics: Tuesdays at 4 p.m. in January. Listen to tales in our storytelling circle with members of the Black Dirt Storytelling Guild. Jan. 8 : Eileen Stelljes stories Made in America~New Lore in a New Land. Jan. 15: Eileen Stelljes spins Trickster Tales. Jan. 22: Deb Weber tells Russian Folktales. Jan. 29: Madelyn Folino, stories of The Talking Cat. For toddlers and preschoolers • Registration begins Jan. 28 for Rhymetime and Storytime, the six-week series of programs on Wednesdays and Thursdays that begin the first week of February. And then some • The annual Friends of the Florida Public Library used book sale takes place Saturday and Sunday, Jan, 19-20, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the Seward Senior Center. The preview is Friday, Jan. 18, from 5 to 8 p.m., for current members of the Friends. You may purchase a membership at the door for $10 or in advance at the library. On Sunday, there will be a catch the bag sale from 2-3 p.m. Bring your own bag or we’ll provide one and fill it up for just $3. Donations of used books, DVDs and videos in excellent condition are welcome and can be dropped off during regular library hours. No magazines, encyclopedias or Reader’s Digest condensed books. A receipt will be provided. • Canine behavior and obedience, Friday, Jan. 18, 6:30 p.m. For all ages. Shari Forst of the Canine Case Squad in Florida, a formally educated and certified canine behaviorist and trainer, will discuss pet behavior problems and solutions, and give puppy-raising tips. Bring the family for a fascinating display of model trains and other rolling stock of various gauges in working model railroad layouts. Experts Jack Youchah and& Joseph Scilla will demonstrate these miniature train replicas and answer questions. Handouts for each child. • Hudson Rhythm Boys will perform Songs of America’s Past on Sunday, Jan. 20, 1 p.m. Sing along and learn the history of American music and the people who made it.
