ROCK TAVERN — On the lawn beside its recently built Fellowship Hall, The Unitarian Universalist Congregation at Rock Tavern rededicated its Peace Pole on Sept. 11, 2011. This pole stood near the old Sanctuary on Sept. 12, 2006, when a devastating fire destroyed that structure. In storage for several years, but now replaced, the message, "May Peace Prevail on Earth" is displayed on its four sides in four languages. One side suffered the heat of the flame,s and its warped surface can be seen to this day. "The pole stands as a bridge between the old and the new, between destruction and renewal, between generations here in Rock Tavern and across the world where the spirit of peace is embraced by people of good will. It does not stand alone, as it is one of over 200,000 peace poles in more than 200 countries with the words written in over 800 languages." September marked the celebration of the International Day of Peace as declared by the United Nations in 1981.
