Traffic light at Route 94 and County Route 1 coming in fall

Warwick — It’s been at least five years in the making. This fall, a traffic light will be installed at the intersection of Route 94 and County Route 1. In 2002, the state agreed to install the light at the “T” intersection, where safety has long been an issue. According to town Supervisor Michael Sweeton, this intersection failed under traffic standards. A traffic study was done by John Collins engineers in 2002 that showed this intersection to be rated ‘E’ and ‘F’ - the two worst ratings possible on a scale from A to F. The levels were determined by the delay times from when a vehicle stops at an intersection to when they actually exit the stop line. The ratings were consistent at all time periods — midday, evening and weekends. At the time of the study, the Town Board had hoped to have the project finished within two years. Work has started at the intersection. A turning lane was suggested but because of a lack of funding, turning restrictions may be implemented. Part of the funding for the light comes from ShopRite. When the ShopRite plaza on Route 94 was approved in 1993, the developers put $45,000 into an escrow account to be used for traffic issues in the area. The traffic study showed the need for traffic lights at both the Route 94/County Route 1 intersection as well as the intersection of Route 94 and Warwick Turnpike, adjacent to ShopRite. Further toward Vernon, N.J., the Sanfordville Road/Route 94 intersection was deemed safe, although Sanfordville Road was eventually widened to include a turning lane.
