These canines have a bone to pick with cancer

Bear Mountain The American Cancer Society invites dogs and their owners to the Dogswalk Against Cancer at Bear Mountain. They’re coming. Dogs of every shape, size and color will be coming to the American Cancer Society’s 16th Annual Dogswalk Against Cancer on Sunday, May 4, at Bear Mountain Park. Last year there were almost 1,000 dogs and 3,000 people. They came from near and far, including the Hudson River Valley, New York City, New Jersey, Connecticut and even Pennsylvania. All for the purpose of celebrating life and fighting human and canine cancers. The Dogswalk Against Cancer begins with a non-competitive walk around Hessian Lake. There are no maximum or minimum amounts to raise, and those with pledges of $500 or more will receive the Golden Bone Award. It’s a chance to make new friends and share memories. Participants can pre-register on the Internet, by regular mail, by fax or register the day of the event. Check-in is from 8 until 9:30 a.m. This year’s Dogswalk honors “Survivor Dogs,” canines that have beaten cancer and given us hope for the future by their courageous examples. Every step brings us closer to a cure. Did you know that last year the Dogswalk raised almost $110,000 of critically needed funds to support research, education and to improve the quality of life for those with cancer? A portion of the proceeds goes to the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine since cancer affects both humans and animals. We are proud to have Advanced Veterinary Care as a Diamond sponsor this year as well as the support of WHUD 100.7FM. Participants can purchase delicious food and shop the many vendors at the event. There will also be information booths on all things dog. Then get ready for some high-flying action. Be dazzled by the Mid Atlantic Dog Disc Club. Their canines will have you out of your seat with their gravity-defying feats of athleticism. See how real police dogs train for their important job of keeping America safe. The New York State Police Canine Unit is on the case and ready for action. Did someone say photo op? Dog lovers will want to stay and play “Musical Dog Sit” or enter Fido in one of our fun contests including “Best Tail-Wagging Dog,” “Best Dog Trick,” or “Best Dog Costume” (one for children, once for adults). There will be prizes and lots of fun!
