The Skylands Classic Disc Golf Tournament

Warwick The Skylands Flying Disc Club is hosting a disc golf tournament, The Skylands Classic in Warwick, on July 22 and 23 at the Brakewell Steel Town of Warwick Disc Golf Course. The park is located on Union Corners Road between the Village of Florida and the hamlet of Edenville. Spectators are welcome all weekend, and admission is free. The athletes participating in this event will play two rounds each day beginning at approximately 9 a.m. The final round is on Sunday, and will begin at approximately 1:30 p.m. Disc golf is similar in rules, strategy, and terminology to more traditional “ball golf” except that players throw high-tech flying discs. The score is determined by how many throws a player takes to land his or her disc in the target. In disc golf, the target is a standardized metal basket with hanging chains that catches flying discs. There are approximately 2,100 courses throughout the United States, and the Professional Disc Golf Association oversees a pro tour with over 800 events. The current Men’s and Women’s World Champions (Nate Doss from Capitola, Calif., and Des Reading of Davenport, Iowa) will participate, as will the 2005 U.S. Disc Golf Championships winner David Feldberg from Springfield, Ore. Also in attendance will be the current World Amateur Champion, Jack Schmalfeld from Raleigh, N.C., current World Junior Champion, Marcus Ranii-Dropcho from Wexford, Pa., 11-time World Champion Ken Climo from Clearwater, Fla., and local professional touring player Steve Brinster from West Milford, N.J. This two-day event is sponsored by The Brooklyn Brewery, Brakewell Steel Fabricators in Chester, Fox 96.7 FM, and many other local businesses. Visit www.nynjdiscgolf.com.
