The scoop from Pine Island

Rumpus in the Rainforest “Thank you, thank you very much.” Oh, sorry, I didn’t see you there. I was just listening to some music from the Pine Island Drama Club’s production of “Rumpus in the Rainforest” which is currently in rehearsals. The “sunless” rainforest gets hopping when the students and explorers come into the forest. There are Elvis impersonating boa constrictors, army ants, “Dreambirds” (otherwise known as exotic birds), hippy sloths, monkeys, crocodiles, and cool jaguars. A poor little frog really wants to see the sun and when she runs into a few obstacles, her friend, Toucan, helps out. Will she ever see the sun? Come and find out on Friday, May 11 and Saturday, May 12 at 7:30 pm at Pine Island Elementary—save these dates! PARP and Pats Pals Not only does the Pine Island drama production have animals, so does PARP! Parents As Reading Partners was a huge success during the month of March. As a reward for reading over 100,000 minutes, Pats Pals, a wild animal organization located in Sugar Loaf, came to Pine Island to show us a few animals. There were two chinchillas, a parrot, a monkey, and two boa constrictors. Plus, by reading over 100,000 minutes, Pine Island was able to buy two quantities of Save-A-Species and purchase an acre of rainforest to preserve! Sweet Peas and Dirt Club This club that celebrates the agricultural beauty of Pine Island started up again for Spring. The club plants crops in a garden build by Eagle Scouts. After the students have worked the garden, they harvest their crops. The school and club members get to enjoy watching the fruits and vegetables grow. They also get to eat what they plant! It’s a nice club that teaches kids a little of what it’s like to be a farmer.
