Warwick — The time to start reading is now, as the Albert Wisner Public Library invites everyone to participate in The Community READS 2011 by reading “The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society.” Then join in the discussions and programs this month related to the themes found in the book. On Sunday, Oct. 16, at noon, enter the library’s potato recipe contest with a potato dish that you think might outshine the potato peel pie mentioned in the book. Bring a batch of your favorite potato recipe to be judged by local chefs and the public. Also on Oct. 16 at 1 p.m., enjoy the family film “Bed Knobs and Broomsticks,” a classic Disney film set during World War II starring Angela Lansbury as an apprentice witch who thwarts a Nazi invasion with the help of a professor of witchcraft and three blitz evacuee children. Winners of the potato recipe contest will be announced after the movie. On Tuesday, Oct. 18, at 6:30 p.m., a discussion will focus on World War II on the home front, which takes a look at how every facet of life was affected by the war. Learn about preserving, canning and pickling from the Victory Garden and sample a popular dish from Grandma’s wartime kitchen. On Thursday, Oct. 20, at 6 p.m., join a discussion of “The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society” led by Wendy Dembeck. Express your thoughts and hear what others think about the themes and characters found in the book. Copies of the book are available at the library. All of the programs are free and open to residents of the Warwick Valley School District. Registration is required. For more information about the recipe contest rules and to register for any of the programs, visit the library’s Web site at www.albertwisnerlibrary.org.
