Teaching fire prevention, one small child at a time

Warwick Firefighter Tim Palmer shows Woodland Hollow Learning Center pre-schooler Kendall VanVugt what a fire hose feels like. Palmer’s demonstration was part of last week’s efforts by Warwick firefighters to provide fire prevention training for area children. Students at Warwick elementary schools, as well as about 350 preschoolers from day care centers, participated. “Prevent Cooking Fires: Watch What You Heat” is the message of this year’s Fire Prevention Week. During the week, fire departments around the country were spreading the word that more fires start in the kitchen than in any other part of the home and teaching families and kids how to keep cooking fires from starting in the first place. Warwick Fire Chief Frank Corkum Jr. also reminds the public that on Oct. 29 when you turn your clocks back, to change the batteries in smoke detectors. Smoke detectors save lives.
