Summer Reading Program kicks off with a party
Florida Florida Public Library’s annual summer reading program will begin with a kick-off party at 2 p.m. on Monday, June 26, in the Seward Senior Center at 4 Cohen Circle in Florida. This year’s New York State theme is “Books: A Treasure!” Readers of all ages are invited to enter the Royal Kingdom and create a costume, with help from the staff of the Hudson Valley Materials Exchange, who will visit with their truck full of recycled art supplies. Before and after the party, youth may register for the summer reading club and sign up for upcoming programs. Summer sessions will continue through Friday, August 4, when events will conclude with entertainment by singer and storyteller Danny Einbender. Registration is required, and is open to residents of the Florida Union Free School District. Residents from outside the district may register for programs as space allows. The summer reading club sign up will be in person only, along with verification of reading logs and collection of weekly prizes. Teen volunteers are being sought to help with the programs. A special orientation for volunteers will be held before the party, at noon on Monday, June 26, followed by free pizza. Volunteers must have completed sixth grade, attend the orientation, and help out a minimum of four hours per week. A letter, verifying community service and listing hours worked, will be provided for each helper in August. A complete calendar listing of the summer schedule is available at the circulation desk. All Florida students received a flyer and calendar to bring home, so parents are advised to check backpacks. For more information about programs, or directions, call 651-7659.
