State introduces new NASCAR custom license plate

ALBANY — Auto racing fans can now show their love for Dale Earnhardt Jr. with a new custom New York state license plate. Department of Motor Vehicles Commissioner David Swarts says the agency has added a #88 Dale Earnhardt Jr. plate to a series of officially licensed NASCAR license plates offered by the DMV that was introduced in 1999. There are currently more than 4,200 vehicles with NASCAR plates issued to New York state motorists. The most popular plate features #3 Dale Earnhardt, with more than 1,100 plates issued. A previously issued plate depicting the younger Earnhardt ranks second in popularity with around 900 plates issued. The initial cost for the custom plates with a DMV-issued number is $34, with an annual $25 renewal fee.
