Warwick - Warwick’s U-13 Boys Travel Soccer Team placed first in the Harvest Cup Challenge sponsored by Washingtonville Soccer Club. On Sunday, Oct. 8, the U-13 Boys headed to Washingtonville’s Shaw Road complex to take part in the Harvest Cup Challenge. This newly formed team coached by Graham Brown didn’t know what to expect. Having to play three 50-minute games in a short period of time was a challenge in and of itself. The boys came out strong against Washingtonville. Several attempts to score by both Ryan Bedross and Cameron Burke-Simmonds were just wide or over the net. Time wore down and both teams fought hard to control the ball. Several attempts at Warwick’s net were stopped by Warwick goalkeeper Drew DiVenuta. Jay Nazari was fouled in the box on a breakaway; he took the penalty kick and scored just under the lunging Washingtonville keeper. The first game ended Warwick 1, Washingtonville 0. Warwick’s next game began immediately. Exhausted and in need of a break, the Warwick team took the field against FC Transylvania, a select team from the Westchester area. Minutes into the first half Warwick found itself down 2-0. But Ryan Bedross crossed the ball in front of Transylvania’s net just out of the reach of their goalie and Cameron Burke-Simmonds got a foot on the ball and sent it to the back of the net. Shane Ginley tied the game up with a breakaway and an outstanding left foot to fake out the goalie. Warwick’s passing game lead to their third and final goal by Jay Nazari. Warwick defeated a stunned FC Translyvania 3-2. After a short rest the boys again took the field against Minisink. As play began, Ryan Bedross quickly found the back of the net by chipping a shot over the head of the Minisink goalie. Jay Nazari’s shot off the post and Ryan’s follow through put Warwick up 2-0. A third goal was scored by Adrian Stelmach who out ran the defenders and found the back of the net to give Warwick a 3-0 lead. The final score was Warwick 3, Minisink 1. The outstanding play by the Warwick defensive line of Taylor Decker, John Ward, Jeff Rappaport, Justin Durland and Nick De Blanco kept Warwick in each game. Warwick’s talented mid-fieldersm - Evan Bailey, Brennan Leon and Dylan Liguori - contributed to the passing game, enabling Warwick to take control of each game. Strikers Lucas Durland and Cheerio Landau also were a big part of Warwick’s success. This story was provided by Dawn Nazari.
