Registration set for Oct. 7 Warwick - The coaches and team members of the Warwick Youth Wrestling are anticipating the start of the team’s eighth season, with registration set for Saturday, Oct. 7. With each season comes more experience and growth for both wrestlers and coaches. The 2005-06 season was a great success, with many team members placing in tournaments. Some highlights were: • The Mid-Atlantic Wrestling Association tournament (Eastern Nationals) was held in April in Maryland, where six boys made it to the finals. Placing in the finals were: A.J. Aberli, second place; Ryan Ferrro, fifth place; Mitchell Wightman, seventh place; and Shane Connolly, eighth place in their respective age and weight groups. • The Folkstyle Nationals Wrestling Championships, held in Iowa in April, where team members Shane Connolly and Mitchell Wightman competed. Mitchell received All-American honors finishing fifth at 125 pounds in the Schoolboy division. • Andy Ehlers and Kyle Wierzbicki both advanced to the Nationals (50 tournaments into one). Registration for the coming season will be held Saturday, Oct. 7 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Warwick Middle School. The program runs from November through March; fees are $75.00 for the first child; $125 for two children; and $150 for a family. The divisions are: • Pee Wee (5-6 year olds) • Bantam (7-8 year olds) • Midget (9-10 year olds) • Junior/Intermediate (11-14 year olds who are still in eighth grade) There are approximately two evening practices per week from 6-8 p.m. at the High School Auxiliary Gym; there also are occasional Saturday practices. Competitors wear sneakers or wrestling shoes, gym shorts and T-shirts or wrestling singlet. This year, the program has expanded to include a novice and varsity-level instruction. Wrestlers in the Bantam/Midget/Junior/Intermediate divisions will have the opportunity (at coach’s discretion) to participate in six regular or season matches. Wrestlers are paired based on age, weight, and experience. Tournaments will be in addition to the above matches.
