Warwick wrestler's roll

Warwick - The Wrestling Wildcats continue their mat success, posting a 9-2 dual meet record so far this season. Warwick outscored Newburgh Free Academy 41-19, Pine Bush 54-15, and Middletown 41-28 in O.C.L. competition. The Wildcats finished second in the Montgomery Dual Meet Tournament defeating Amsterdam, Hoosick Falls, Ilion and Cobleskill before falling in the finals to Duanesburg High 38-34. Joe Stoltzenberg was named the most outstanding wrestler for Warwick. Warwick finished second as a team at the Michael O’Connell Memorial Holiday Tournament. The Wildcats were led by individual champions Stoltzenberg, Mike Knapp, Kevin Connolly and Warren Huffman. Pat Sweeney, Mike Santalla and Andrew Greenlaw earned silver medals while Kevin Geidel and Mitch Wightman finished third and fourth. The Wildcats begin league competition Jan. 10 and over the next three weeks face the most challenging part of their schedule. Led by Stoltzenberg and Knapp, the team’s undefeated senior captains, the Wildcats will rely on freshmen standouts Santalla and Garrett Flanagan, solid sophomores Connolly, Greenlaw, Geoff Donovan and Dan Kokolulak, and juniors Sweeney and Dave Martine. They will look for leadership from seniors Shaun Barrett, Jamal Morris, Warren Huffman and Kyle Regan. The surprise wrestler up to this point is seventh grader Wightman who has held his own at the varsity level. John Canty is the wrestling coach at Warwick Valley High School.
