In front of more than 100 people at Memorial Park, the Warwick Wildcats defeated Montgomery Little League 5-3 to win the girls Major Division Softball District Championship.
According Coach Charlotte Garofalo, this is only Warwick Little League Softball’s second District 19 Championship ever and the first in the Major Girls 11-12 year old division.
The Wildcats had gone undefeated in the All-Star Tournament, defeating Chester, Goshen, Walkill Area and Montgomery twice to take the title.
The winning pitcher was Mia Rivera, who allowed one hit and no runs across five innings.
Olivia Martino pitched the final inning for the save.
The offense was led by:
Eva Garofalo: two doubles, three RBIs.
Melina Garby: two hits.
Katie Fiore: one for three (triple), RBI.
Olivia Martino: two for three, including a triple.
The girls turned an amazing double play, throwing out the tying run at the plate when right fielder lily Beattie threw out a runner on first base on what would have been a base hit, and then first baseman Etta Garofalo turned and threw a strike home to her twin sister Eva to cut off the tying run and help preserve the win.
The teams head coach is coached by Charlotte Garofalo with assistant coaches Nick Nicosia, Tucker Lincoln and Jason Martino.
Players are: Eva Garofalo, Etta Garofalo, Annie Lincoln, Katie Fiore, Lily Beattie, Melina Garby, Olivia Martino, Rylee Moore, Jalyn Rosario, Kiley Cunningham, Mia Rivera, Christie Sass and Adriana Nicosia.
"This is a great story as these girls have played together since they are 7 years old," Coach Garofalo said, "and after losing in the championships the last two years, they have finally come out on top."
