Warwick - On Sunday October 22, the Warwick U13 boys soccer team coached by Graham Brown defeated the Southern Ulster Football Club in Plattekill by a score of 5-3. As expected, SUFC came out strong and within minutes were up 1-0. They scored again on a penalty kick just out of the reach of Warwick’s goalie Drew DiVenuta. Warwick had plenty of shots on goal, the ball just couldn’t find the net. Halfway through the first half Ryan Bedross followed his shot and through confusion in front of the goal was able to score Warwick’s first goal of the day. Shortly thereafter Cameron Burke-Simmonds crossed the ball and Adrian Stelmach scored tying the game at two. Play was evenly matched at the start of the second half as both teams struggled to get the go ahead goal. SUFC was able to score and went ahead 3-2 halfway through the second half. Warwick fought back and Ryan Bedross’s beautiful cross curved into the net to tie the game at 3. Warwick’s Jay Nazari was fouled inside the box and was called upon to take the penalty kick. He did so and put the Warwick boys on top 4-3. Lucas Durland sealed the game with an insurance goal with time running out in the game. Warwick’s hard working defensive squad of Evan Bailey, Jeff Rappaport, John Ward and Nick DeBlanco and midfielders Dylan Liguori, Sam Chester and Brennan Leon were able to break up SUFC’s game plan. Offensive players Shane Ginley, Lucas Durland and Cheerio Landau moved the ball nicely up the field. Warwick’s goalie Drew DiVenuta, playing on a sprained ankle, had six saves on the day. This was the first league win for this newly formed team that is playing “up” in a mixed age division. The team, due in large part to the influence of their professional coach, hard work and determination, has been showing signs of their potential. They play again at home on Sunday, Oct. 29, at 10 a.m. This article was provided by Dawn Nazari.
