Warwick - On a cold and blustery afternoon, and before some of the spectators had decided to leave their cars and brave the chilled air, the U12 Warwick Fire boys team opened their account with a goal by Nick Blomfield in the first minutes of the game. The shot was high and hard and the Kingston goaltender had little chance to do anything but pick the ball out of the net. The play continued back and forth with Warwick Fire’s central defenders Brain McGovern and Andrew Fraser comfortably containing any advances by the opposition. The majority of the activity was in the Kingston end of the field as Fire midfielders Brian Allan, Phillip Goska, Blomfield and Gregory Snigur relentlessly pressured the Revolution goal area. Finally, the Fire broke through as forward Ryan Killeen scored on a beautiful cross from Allan. Just before the half, Killeen, taking a pass from Snigur on the edge of the 18-yard box, weaved his way to close range before finishing for his second of the game. Shortly after the break, fullback Ryan Brack found himself clear on another through ball from Goska, only to be denied by a point-blank save from the Revolution goalie. This seemed to give Kingston some encouragement as they fought back bravely to score from a goal mouth scramble and an uncharacteristic lapse in concentration by Warwick’s defensive. The two goal margin was short lived however, as Goska picked up a loose ball in front of the Kingston net and buried a shot to make it 4 to 1. Killeen, who played the whole game as the lone forward, was rewarded for his efforts when he completed his hat trick on a rebound in front of the net to close out the game 5-1 in favor of the Fire. The Fire’s next game is at noon at the Town Park against second-place Hyde Park Lightening.
