Warwick Fire rekindles
Warwick - The Warwick Fire played its last regular season game on June 11 against Middletown and the Fire played strong defense, offense was stymied by capable goalkeeper and Middletown defense. Middletown pushed through to score two goals, one that the defense couldn’t clear and one on a Fire goalkeeper error. The final score was 2-0. But not wanting to end the season on a low note, the Fire played a make up game on the first day of summer against Newburgh’s Real, a team which has been them earlier in the season by a single goal. Within the first five minutes of play, the Fire twice pushed through Real’s defense, with Phillip Goska scoring the first goal and Nicholas Daigle scoring the second goal on a breakaway. Michael Bedross, recovering from a head to head crash with a Real player, ran the ball up to the keeper and booted it in. Nick Blomfield then took advantage of a through ball to score. Both teams stepped up their level of play, but the ball stayed mid-pitch for much of the second half. A corner kick by Real connected with a Fire player for an own goal, which was followed shortly thereafter by a strong overhead shot just out of reach of Fire’s keeper. The Fire finished the season with a win, 4-2 over Real. In the fall, the team will be moving up to U12 and the larger pitch. They’ll have the summer to train, connect with new players and prepare for the change.
