SUNY Orange to celebrate National Girls in Sports Day
MIDDLETOWN Orange County Community College’s department of movement science will celebrate the 20th anniversary of National Girls in Sports Day on Saturday, Feb. 11. Organized by the National Girls and Women in Sports Coalition, the day involves more than five million members across the country. This year’s theme is “Count me in.” The all-day celebration will be offered to the first 125 local girls, ages seven to 14, who preregister for the event. Beginning at 9 a.m. at the Physical Education Building at East Conklin Ave in Middletown, the day will include various fitness, wellness and sports activities, and attendance at a SUNY Orange women’s basketball game. After the game, the girls will be able to swim in the college’s Olympic-size pool. “It’s a wonderful opportunity for us to bring girls in and let them see competitive sports and explore areas of health and wellness,” said department chair Sheila Stepp. To participate, girls can call 341-4885 or write to sahearne@sunyorange.edu.
