NEW ROCHELLE — The St. Stephen’s Sixth Grade Girls CYO basketball team just completed another successful season, once again reaching the New York State CYO Finals.
The squad, coached by Debra Girardi, lost to Sacred Heart of Staten Island, 41-37, in the final held Sunday, March 19, at The Ursuline School in New Rochelle.
This is the third consecutive season Girardi has led a team to the finals following an undefeated regular season.
After victories over Dutchess County champions, St. Columba, and Rockland County champions, St. Catherine’s, the Lady Warriors took on Sacred Heart in the finals for the second consecutive year.
During a tightly contested rematch, both teams took leads and relinquished them while displaying the heart and skills that brought them back to the state finals.
In the end, it was Sacred Heart who came out with the four-point win but it was the underdog Warriors who came out earning the respect and admiration of an enthusiastic crowd.
This team’s continued success is a direct result of the extensive support provided by an incredible group of volunteers, including Kathryn Welling, Dave Evans, Dr. Larry Washington and Megan McGourty, as well as the players’ families and fans.
Also, a huge thanks goes out to Ryan and Dustin Vanlieu of GymRatz Performance of Florida, N.Y., for their support of St. Stephen’s CYO program and their comprehensive training that propelled this team to the state finals.
