Florida - As far as the Seward Spartans are concerned, the Tuxedo baseball team has earned its nickname. The long-time rival Tornados swept the Spartans in three Division games last week, putting a severe damper on Florida’s chance at the Division V Title. On Monday at Tuxedo the host team out-hit and out-pitched the Spartans to win 9-1. The only bright spot for Florida was Mickey Collins, who banged out three more hits. Actually, another bright spot was Will Oliphant who relieved for Florida in the bottom of the third and pitched shutout ball the rest of the way. Tuesday in Florida, Tuxedo dominated again, winning this time 10-0. Jeremy Harter had two of the five Spartan hits. Back in Tuxedo on Thursday it looked like the Spartans would finally break the spell. They took an early 6-1 lead and still led 7-6 going into the last of the sixth inning. The Tornado’s Mike Farrell kept the whitewash going, however, with a three-run homer in that fateful sixth. Collins continued his torrid hitting with three base hits. The senior Spartan reportedly has a shot at the state career hit record. That should add some excitement to the last six Division games for the Spartans. Their record now is 11-5 overall. Unfortunately, those five losses have all come in league play.
