Spartans look to Sectionals

Florida - In the last league game of the season, the struggling Seward Spartans lost to the host Chester Academy last Tuesday by a 43-37 score. The loss finds Florida with a 3-5 record in Division V, 10-9 overall, with one non-league game left to play. Although not too impressive, that record does earn the Spartans a berth in the Section 9 Class C Tournament. At Chester the Spartans fell behind early, ending the first quarter down 14-7. Although the Spartans did hold Chester to only eight points in the second quarter, they couldn’t do much better on offense themselves, still trailing 22-15. It simply didn’t get much better for coach Rob Gravelle’s team as the home-standing Hambletonians held on for that 43-37 win. Brenden Myers was the only Spartan to hit double figures with ten points. Bryan Folkl managed nine and Saddam Sahmanovic tacked on eight. Jeremy Harter and Andy Zis contributed five apiece to an offense that just couldn’t get anything going. The only good part is that all five Spartan losses to Tri-Valley, Chester and Tuxedo were by rather small margins. On a good night the Spartans should be able to beat any one of those teams. Maybe change that “good” to “very good.” Nobody said the move to Class C would be easy.
