Softball players help family stricken by cancer

Tournament to raise money Sept. 30 - Oct. 1 Washingtonville The Chipperfield family of Washingtonville has had a rough few years. Their 17-year-old son, Garrett, has been battling brain cancer. His mother, Glenda, was recently been diagnosed with breast cancer. The Washingtonville Women’s Fall Slow Pitch Softball Tournament has always ended its season in the fall with a benefit event. This year the tournament will help the Chipperfields pay their medical bills by hosting a 10-team softball tournament at Mays field in Washingtonville on Sept. 30 and Oct. 1. “We are asking the community to help us in our endeavor,” said softball player Cathy Liljequist. “Whatever your business can contribute to aid in our success would be greatly appreciated.” Garret was diagnosed with a brain tumor in the summer of 2004, at age 15. Since then he has had two surgeries that have resulted in some motor, sensory, and speech loss. He is now undergoing stem cell transplants with the hope of arresting the growth of the tumor. He knows the treatment will make him sicker but is determined to win his battle, Liljequist says. Garrett is a strong-willed, highly intelligent young man who has always enjoyed working with his hands. He is a Washingtonville High School Student who has achieved honor roll status. Glenda has been a member of the women’s softball community in the past. Fortunately her cancer was caught early, and she is optimistic about the future. Garrett is a member of this year’s Young Champions Class from the 105 Airlift Wing at Stewart Air Guard Base, from which Liljequist recently retired. The Young Champions program recognizes the courage and valor of youngsters who have battled or are currently battling life-threatening or debilitating injuries or illnesses. Garrett will not be able to make the ceremony at the base this month because he will be in the hospital for more stem cell treatments. “It is our hope that we will be able to present him his medal at the tournament,” Liljequist said. The fee for teams to enter the tournament is $200. For more information, to enter a team, or to make a contribution, call Cathy Liljequist at 551-9418 or e-mail her at lil1066@gmail.com.
