Newburgh - Mike Hoyt, former star at S.S. Seward in Florida, is shining brightly at Mount St. Mary in Newburgh. Last Saturday evening Hoyt scored 28 points against St. Joseph’s-Patchogue on his way to becoming the all-time scoring leader at the Mount with 1,519 points. Hoyt, a junior, still has the rest of this season and all of next year to establish a truly unreachable record. The game which Mount St. Mary won, 91-82, was an exciting one with a large, noisy crowd swelled by a large contingent of Florida fans and boosters. All there to see No. 11 work his magic as he did in his senior year at Seward when he led his team to the New York State Class D Championship. His record-setting points came on one of his trade-mark three-pointers just before the half-time break. Action on the floor was halted, Hoyt was presented with the game ball, and pictures were taken to record the historic event. Hoyt’s parents, Mike and Donna, as well as his brother Joe, a freshman on the team, were there to offer congratulations along with the entire Mount St. Mary squad and staff. That, of course, included head coach Duane Davis who had the good fortune and keen eye to recruit one of the outstanding NCAA Division III players in the nation.
