Florida - Seward Spartan senior Mickey Collins set a new New York State high school career hitting record last Monday with a double in the fifth inning against Division V opponent Tri-Valley. He had tied the record for career hits at 172 with a single in the third inning. The record was even made sweeter for Collins as his team backed up his 12-strikeout performance on the mound with a 7-1 win in Grahamsville. Lee Buelta had a two-run double and Bryan Folkl chipped in with two hits and an RBI. On Wednesday the Spartans didn’t fare as well at home in the second of a three-game series against the Bears. A five-run second inning clinched the issue as Florida fell 5-3. Dylan Gaucher was a perfect 3-3 at the place and Brenden Myers added two hits. The split with Tri-Valley leaves the Spartans with a 2-6 Division V record, but they still maintain a very respectable 12-7 overall record. Still a few more games left for Collins to add to that hit record and for Myers to catch Mamaroneck’s Frank Chiou’s stolen base record which was set from 1990-93. The rest of the week’s schedule was washed out by heavy rain.
