Rain doesn't dampen Fire's effort

Warwick - There was enough of a break in the rain last Sunday (June 4) for the Warwick Fire to play the Florida U11 boys on the Warwick pitch. Warwick came on strong in the first half of the game, keeping the ball in the Florida half. But, try as they might, Nick Blomfield, Brian Allan, Phillip Goska and Nicholas Daigle saw all of their shots on goal saved by the Florida keeper, who seemed to have many more than two arms. Florida took the ball to the Warwick half a couple of times, but they were easy saves for keeper Jamie Eigo. Just before the first half ended, Blomfield finally managed a goal on a breakaway with a shot into the corner of the net. At the start of the second half, Blomfield passed to Eigo, now playing midfield, who crossed to Goska, who booted it in for a goal after the Florida keeper made a rare fumble of the ball. Almost immediately after the set up, Daigle made his first goal of the game on a pass from Blomfield. Playing hard defense had its downside, as the Fire got hit with a penalty for tripping. Florida scored on a direct kick, narrowing Warwick’s lead to 3-1. Warwick’s keeper Matt Unick made other diving saves in the second half to keep the Florida offense out of the net. But it was Blomfield who pushed through Florida’s defense for the next three goals, one of which was a high one over the keeper’s head. At the whistle, Warwick was victorious by the score of 6-1. The Fire plays its last regular game next Sunday against Middletown; the team also has a make up game with Newburgh’s FC Real, which had originally been rained out.
