On the road

Appalachian Trail hikers Joseph, 28, from Maine (trail name “Jesus”) and Chris, 18, from Georgia (trail name “DD”) stopped in Warwick Aug. 1 for supplies. They had spent a cold, rainy night on the trail in Warwick at the Wildcat Shelter. Starting their hike on June 29, both men are about 800 miles into their 2,300-mile journey. Taking slight detours off the trail enable them to get a good meal and pick up other essentials like energy and chocolate bars to replace the many calories they lose each day. They also grabbed a sandwich at Bagel Time in Warwick which they consider to be a “big meal” and used the nearby Mac machine to get some cash. Both are on a tight budget. Their next stop was St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Vernon, N.J., where hikers are permitted to take showers, do laundry, and have shelter for the night all for a small donation to the church.
