No putts about it: Inspire's Annual Golf Tournament is right around the corner

Goshen — The word “green” means different things to different people. Most people will think of flowers and plants in bloom, and new grass growing. In a golfer’s mind, however, “green” means something completely different: the area on a golf course, with the shortest cut grass, that contains the golf hole. Every year, the Inspire Foundation Golf Tournament hosts a number of golfers who have only one thing on their minds, getting to that green, and getting to it in the least number of shots possible. This year’s tournament will be held on Monday, May 8, at Otterkill Golf and Country Club in Campbell Hall. Proceeds will benefit Inspire and its services for children and adults with disabilities. In gearing up for the tournament, Inspire has put together a short list of common golf related terms. “Ball In Play” refers to a ball, considered in play from the moment a stroke is made on it from the teeing ground. On May 8, balls will be put into play at 10 a.m. with a shotgun start, following registration at 8:30 a.m. and a continental breakfast. “Ace” refers to a hole in one. The Hole-In-One contests on May 8 offer a chance to win an all new 2006 Ford Fusion, sponsored by Leo Kaytes Ford in Warwick. Winners will be announced at the awards ceremony and barbecue to end the tournament. “Foursomes” are a competition format, in which teams are comprised of two players each, and players alternate hitting the same ball. A Sponsor Foursome in the Inspire Foundation tournament can be reserved by donating $750. This includes golf, a tee or green sign, high visibility at the event, and an exclusive gift for each golfer. Regular Foursomes are also available, for a $540 donation, or individuals can play by donating $135. “Par For The Course” is what is considered normal and acceptable for a particular situation. The Inspire Foundation Golf Tournament is anything but par for the course. All of the proceeds from this tournament will benefit the Inspire Foundation, which provides financial support for Inspire. Officially known as Orange County Cerebral Palsy Association, Inspire provides physical and occupational therapies, speech and language pathology, audiology, dentistry and other services for children and adults who are facing a variety of disabling conditions and challenges. All funds raised stay in Orange County where, in cases of financial difficulty, services may be available on a sliding-fee scale. “Fore” is a word of warning yelled out by a player who has hit an errant shot. A word of warning regarding the tournament: registration is limited, so sign up early. Businesses can contribute and receive recognition on a Tee or Green Sign by donating $150. Beer and beverages, sponsored by Phoenix Beverages, and snacks will be provided on the course. For more information or to register, call 294-7300 ext. 233.
