More than 70 students earn Presidential fitness awards

Warwick - The Warwick Valley High School Physical Education staff administered the “Presidential Challenge in Physical Fitness” assessment to all 1,447 students in the school over a recent three-week period. Students were tested for strength (push ups and sit ups), flexibility (V - sit and reach), cardio vascular fitness (one-mile run) and agility (20-yard shuttle run). The President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports awards the Presidential Fitness Status for all students who can score in the top 15 percent nationally on the standardized test which for a 16-year-old male and female corresponds to the following scores: For boys, the standards are: running a mile in 6 minutes, 8 seconds; 44 consecutive push ups; 56 sit ups in one minute; flexibility of six inches past the heel; and complete the 20-yard shuttle run in 8.7 seconds or less. For girls, the standards are: running a mile in 8 minutes, 23 seconds; 24 consecutive push ups; 45 sit ups in one minute; flexibility of nine inches beyond the heel; and complete the 20-yard shuttle run in 10.1 seconds or less.
