Central Valley — The second annual Presidents Weekend Indoor Tournament, hosted by the Monroe Woodbury Soccer Club’s travel program, attracted more than 250 participants from the club’s recreational and development league. According to coordinator Frank Niglia, “The tournament was originally created as a way for the travel program to give something back to the general club, for all the support we’ve received over the years, but it has grown into a way to give young players a taste of what more competitive soccer, the kind you find in the travel program, is like.” The tournament, held over the weekend of February 18 and 19, at the middle school gym, ran two full days. The bleachers were crowded, and although trophies and prizes were awarded in six divisions, the real winners were the players who turned out. Bradley Williams of Monroe, a travel coach and coordinator of the event, noted that, “Thanks to the outstanding efforts of the coaches, and more than 80 parent volunteers, we got more kids on and off the playing area faster, and in a more organized fashion, than we ever imagined possible.” For more information about the soccer club’s travel program, write to mwsctravel@frontiernet.net or call 782-1575.
