Monroe K of C crown free throw champions

Monroe - Thirteen boys and girls from Monroe and neighboring towns were named local champions of the 2006 Knights of Columbus free throw championship and have earned the right to compete at the district level. Monroe Council 2079 sponsored the local competition at the Sacred Heart School Gymnasium on Jan. 8. Youngsters ages 10 to 14 were eligible to participate. The first-place winners were: Austin Masiello, winner of the boy’s 10-year-old division. Kevin Zambrzycki, the 11-year-old title. Ken Tobey and Carly Morrison, winners of the 12-year-old categories. Brian Zambrzycki, the 14-year-old title. Each contestant was allowed 15 free-throw attempts in the contest. Ties were settled by successive rounds of five free throws per contestant until a winner emerged. Each of the first-place winners received a patch and engraved plaque. They will compete in the district competition to be held in February, with the chance of moving to the regional and state levels. Information for this story was provided by Jim Banville.
