Warwick — The Warwick Lions Club will hold its 15th Annual Lions Labor Day 5K Race/Walk and Children’s Fun Run on Monday, Sept. 4, beginning at the Warwick Middle School. Race day begins with registration opening at 7:30 a.m. The race/walk starts at 9 a.m., and the Children’s Fun Run will follow. The 3.1 mile course is in a country setting and closed to traffic. This moderately difficult course has some rolling hills and is certified by the Orange Runners Club. There will be music in three places along the way to keep the runners motivated. There will be a pre-race warm up, and post- race massages will be available to participants. Trophies and cash prizes will be given to the first, second and third place male/female overall runners. Medals will be awarded three deep in all age groups with five-year splits in age groups 30 to 70 years. Commemorative ribbons will be given to all 5K and Fun Run participants, and there will be balloons for the children. Everyone will be treated to an array of post-race treats courtesy of local donors. Plus, Warwick’s generous merchants have donated post-race door prizes. Pre-registration before Aug. 24 is $15 and $17 the day of race. The cost is $3 per child for the Fun Run. Newly designed custom T-shirts are guaranteed to pre-registered 5K participants. On-line registration is now available at www.active.com. For an application or more information call George McManus at 986-3054 or Jack Ellis at 986-1405 or e-mail mcmanus@warwick.net. or jellis@warwick.net. Participant involvement will benefit community efforts in supporting the Lion’s Quest Program, an international education program that stresses the development of life skills such as critical thinking, multicultural understanding, teamwork, personal accountability, integrity, conflict resolution and resistance to substance abuse. Educators from all schools in the Warwick Valley School District have received training and are now certified to teach the program. Over the years, the Warwick Lions have contributed more than $75,000 through grants and proceeds from the 5K Race. Each year funds are needed to train incoming teachers, and to purchase new workbooks and related materials. For more information, visit www.lionsquest.org. In addition to the Lion’s Quest Program, this year the Lion’s Club will honor former race director Carol McManus, who lost her battle with pancreatic cancer in April. In honor of Carol, an additional pledge sheet will be available to help raise funds for Pancreatic Cancer research. All funds raised for this portion of the program will benefit the Carol McManus Memorial Fund. To further honor Carol’s dedication to this race, the Warwick Lion’s 5K Race will be renamed in her honor for the 2007 race.
