Lady Spartans nipped by Burke Catholic
Last Thrursday in Goshen, the Seward Lady Spartans suffered a tough 42-38 loss to John S. Burke Catholic in a non-league contest. Playing up a Division against the Class B Eagles, the Spartans more than held their own. At half-time it was tied at 27-27. Turnovers and missed foul shots, (10-27), however, left Florida trailing by eight points with three minutes left. Despite those turnovers the Spartans did manage to take a one-point lead with one minute left in the game. Burke’s three-pointer and subsequent steal iced the game for the host team as they held on to that four-point margin. Kylie Burnside had a game-high l9 points as she knocked down four 3-pointers, one in each quarter. No other Spartan was able to hit double figures. Kathleen Folkl had five points and Selin Tekin and Casey Heller managed four apiece. There’s ample room for improvement for coach Joe DiMattina’s 2-2 squad, but there’s also a few rays of light as the league portion of the season approaches.
