Goshen —The Lady Gladiators clinched the Division Championship with their 7-1 win over Port Jervis. The Lady Gladiators understood what was at stake and walked onto the pitch determined to win. Within the first 10 minutes of play, Goshen scored 3 goals. Emily Lavell, the senior striker, played a pivotal role in each goal. The first goal was scored on a pass from Lavell to Erin Ortiz, who turned and placed the ball in the back of the net. Minutes after this goal was scored, Kristina Pereira received a back pass from Lavell, chipping the ball over the keeper into the net. Later, Port Jervis was bringing the ball down the field when Lavell stepped in and began the counter-attack to regain possession. She then passed the ball to Andrea Behrer, who kicked a blazing low ball into the corner of the net. Port Jervis readjusted after this flurry of goal scoring opportunities and began double-marking Lavell. Toward the end of the first half, Goshen created another scoring opportunity when Erin Ortiz headed the ball into the net on a clever crosspass from Ria Chionchio. With only minutes remaining, Siobhan Krutki, the defensive midfielder, received the ball on the 18-yard line and, with a perfect finish, chipped it into the net. In the second half of the game, Goshen started with Kate Clark and Carly Jung playing striker positions. Kate Clark scored on a pass from Carly Jung. Natalie Gavilanes received a beautiful pass from Carly Jung, scoring the last goal for Goshen. As the game was winding down, Port was awarded a penalty kick. The Goshen keeper made a valiant attempt to stop the kick, but couldn’t keep a clean sheet. The final score was Goshen 7, Port Jervis 1. Submitted by Kelly Stephens, Jess Weir, Kelly Stephens
