Kid's Fishing Day postponed to Saturday, May 17

WARWICK — This year's annual "Take a Kid Fishing Day," sponsored by the Warwick Valley Rod & Gun Club, has been postponed until Saturday, May 17.

The annual event had been scheduled for Saturday, May 3. And the weather forecast for that day, as usual, was not important.

While most people are happy with sunshine and mild temperatures, many believe the fishing is better when it's cloudy and wet. But no matter what the weather forecast is, the kids are always bound to have fun and a memorable experience. So until this year, everyone eligible was urged to participate, rain or shine.

But this time the weather problem was safety.

Heavy rains during the week leading up to "Take a Kid Fishing Day, " had raised the level and increased the speed of the Wawayanda Creek on the picturesque Baird Farm.

After several visits during the week, club members finally decided the high and fast waters might create an unsafe condition for the young anglers. And it might also wash away the approximately 400 trout that members of the Warwick Valley Rod & Gun Club would again stock in the creek.

But all is not lost.
"Take a Kid Fishing Day," has been rescheduled for Saturday, May 17, between 9:30 a.m. and noon.

The annual event is organized by Club members for youngsters, ages five to 14, accompanied by their parents or guardians.

Each child is instructed to bring his or her own fishing tackle. A child, however, does not have to catch a fish to win one of the prizes awarded at the close of the event. Since it is not a contest, it has been the practice for the Club to award a prize to each participating child, whether the child has caught a fish or not. In the past, the prizes have included fishing rod and reel combos, tackle boxes, lures and other outdoor recreation items not necessarily related to fishing.

As usual, The Warwick Advertiser will be on hand to photograph the event. Among many other subjects, we will be looking for the smallest kid with the biggest fish.
