Kennett gymnasts win state championship

Goshen — The Girls’ Level 5 Kennett Gymnastic Team won the New State Championship held in Cortlandt Manor on June 2, 3 and 4. The girls placed first in the large team division out of 38 teams from all over New York. The team had an all-around score of 226.500. Individual results were as follows: Novella Cooper placed 12 on vault in the 8-year-old division and ended with a solid all-around score of 35.150. Alexa Berry, Mary Riley, and Heather Perry competed in the 9-year-old rookie division. Alexa finished in second place with an all-around score of 37.275. She also won second place on bars, third place on floor, and fifth place on vault. Mary Riley scored her personal best all-around with a 35.125 and won third on bars. Heather Perry scored a 34.375 all-around and had a strong performance on all events. In the 10-year-old rookie division, Torey Puff finished second place with an all-around score of 38.425. Torey also placed second on beam, third on vault and bars, and seventh on floor. Nicole Schulz placed 13th with an all-around score of 36.925. Nicole also took second on floor and seventh on bars. Katriona Blezy finished with an all-around score of 36.450 and placed second on bars and sixth on vault. Kiley Murphy had a solid performance, finishing with an all-around score of 36.050 and coming in 11th on vault. In the 11-year-old rookie division, Kennett took the first, second, and fourth place all-around titles. Elizabeth Berlin was the all-around champion with a score of 37.725, followed by Darby Germain with an all-around score of 37.600. Elizabeth also took third on vault and floor and fourth on bars and beam, while Darby took second on vault, third on bars, sixth on floor, and seventh on beam. Deanna Venello placed fourth all-around with a score of 37.125. Deanna was also the first-place champion on vault and floor. In the 13-year-old rookie division, Shaelyn Cavanaugh finished second with an all-around score of 36.8, followed by teammate Krista Benson finishing third with an all-around score of 36.6. Shaelyn was the first-place beam champion and came in third on vault and floor and fifth on bars. Krista finished second on vault and bars and placed fifth on floor. All of the girls proved to be true champions at this event.
