Goshen — The Goshen Junior Varsity Boys Soccer Team finished their season at 14-2 on Oct. 28 with a hard-fought victory over Middletown. The 2-1 score was typical of their season, as the team needed to work hard in many of their games against well-skilled opponents. Some of these close games included the following: September 8 — 4-0 victory over S.S. Seward In their first game of the season, Goshen slipped by Seward on 2 goals from Jonathan Obregon and one each from Kyle Borisewich and John Armistcad. Robert Burke provided 2 assists while Nicholas Bechard and Alex Finkclsiein added one each. Patrick Robinson captained the defense from the sweeper position. • September 22 — 2-0 victory over Warwick Coming off a loss to Minisink Valley one-week prior, the team was able to re-group to slip by Warwick 2-0. Bobby Lombardo scored a brace with assists from John Fasano and Robert Burke. Ryan Leone, Robert Dolney. Raymond Cawein, and Michael Gould anchored a defense that would go on to record nine clean sheets for the season. • September 28 — 3-0 victory over Pine Bush After their second defeat in six games — this time to Owego by a score of 2-0 — the team again rebounded to overcome a strong Pine Bush squad 3-0. Andrew Dorian, John Armistead, and Robert Burke contributed goals, with Burke, Ryan Leone, and Bobby Lombardo providing the assists. The goalkeeping triumvirate of Ryan Dzierzak, Kyle Birdsall, and Bryan Somers teamed up to record one of their many shutouts. • October 6 — 5-0 victory over Burke Catholic In their yearly clash with cross-town rivals Burke Catholic, the boys were able to prevail 5-0. This game was marked by the emergence of players who were asked to step up their games due to injuries that would ultimately keep usually stalling players out for the rest of the season. Those answering the call for increased minutes included Pierson Brownell and Connor Burnett, who displayed effective marking skills on Burke’s hard-working strikers, Kenny Kelly, who provided solid play from both the midfield and defense positions, and Matthew Kaufman, who provided high-quality minutes at the outside midfield positions. These players would go on to improve their game throughout the season at pivotal points in the remaining games. • October 28 — 2-1 victory over Middletown In the final game of the season for both teams, Goshen had to come back from a one-goal deficit to defeat a Middletown team much improved from the previous match earlier in the season. Goals were scored by Chris Meaney on an excellent individual play, and Robert Burke from the penalty spot. Jeff Pennings helped seal the win with an excellent performance on the left side of the defense, particularly in the closing minutes of the game. The Goshen Junior Boys Team would like to thank the following people for helping make their season an unqualified success: The Goshen Parents Soccer Association, the players’ club coaches, the boys’ parents, the buildings and grounds crew who helped keep the field in shape despite the weather, their teachers at Goshen High School, Varsity coaches Mike Kelly and Matt Quick, and the athletic director, Bob Siracuse. In other news: In the Third Annual Copa De Monti tournament, the team under captain Bobby Lombardo, which included John Armistead, Jeff Pennings, Connor Burnett, and Robert Dolney, were able to come from the fourth seed in the playoffs to take the crown.
