Goshen — The Goshen Girls’ Varsity Soccer Team is in the midst of a very exciting regular season. The Lady Gladiators have maintained a league record of 4-0. As a result of hard work and dedication, they have defeated some of their toughest competition. The relentless offense has scored in all league contests. The leading scorer is Erin Ortiz with a total of 22 goals, followed by Emily Lavell and Krissy Pereira with three each, and Kelly Stephens and Carly Jung with two each. The Gladiators’ keeper, Kathleen Payne, has five shut-outs to date. This week the Gladiators played three games. On Monday they were victorious against Suffern with a score of 7-3. Erin Ortiz scored four goals with Emily Lavell adding two more goals and Krissy Pereira scoring on a perfectly placed corner kick. Arielle Goyzueta, Michele Behrer, Kelly Mallard, and Krissy Pereira played outside strikers, unsettling the keeper and creating some breakaway opportunities for the center strikers. The defense, led by Carly Jung, Adrianna Capelli, Ria Chionchio, and Kate Clar,k successfully contained Suffern’s offense, allowing only three scoring opportunities. The next day, Tuesday, the Lady Gladiators played a league game against Monticello. Once again, the defense contained Monticello’s offensive forays with Ria Chionchio, Rachel Jordan, and Adrianna Capelli preventing any outside runs down the sidelines. Siobahn Krutki, controlling center midfield, intercepted a pass and switched fields, giving Krissy Pereira the ball. Krissy chipped the ball to Emily Lavell, who pulled the trigger beating the keeper and scoring a goal three minutes into the game. Later in the game, Kelly Stephens chipped the ball to Erin Ortiz, who picked out Emily Lavell with a beautifully weighted pass, giving Emily two goals in the game. During the 39 minutes of the game, Goshen was awarded a corner kick taken by Krissy Pereira, who arched the ball into the net, putting the score at 3-1. As the half was in its final seconds, Kelly Mallard, showing great vision, put the ball through to Erin Ortiz leading to Goshen’s fourth goal. Monticello never let up and came back twice to finish the first half with a 4-2 score. During the second half, Erin Ortiz, with great confidence, demanded the ball on a penalty kick, scoring her second goal of the game. Goshen was now playing a beautiful passing game with Andrea Behrer’s strong presence in center midfield and her sister, Michelle Behrer, calling for the ball on the outside. Andrea made a beautiful shot low to the corner, forcing Monticello’s keeper to dive across the net to make the save. Natalie Gavalanes, in a striker position, constantly put pressure on the defense by charging the net, requiring their defense to stay in their own end. Erin Ortiz went on to score two more goals with assists from Carly Jung and Kate Clark. The game ended with a final score of Goshen 7, Monticello 3. Two days later, the Gladiators met Monticello on their home field to play a very competitive and physical game. Goshen’s midfield was a strong presence involved in every offensive and defensive play. The center midfielders, Kelly Stephens and Siobahn Krutki, met every ball played into their territory. Their valiant efforts led to a costly error on Monticello’s part, concluding in a beautiful header by Erin Ortiz assisted by Carly Jung. Monitcello came right back, scoring a goal to tie up the game. Morgan Gonzalez and Erin Minnock showed great endurance playing in extremely muddy conditions without letting up the pressure on Monticello, preventing them from getting back into the game. During the 45 minutes, Goshen was awarded a corner kick. Krissy Pereira placed the kick perfectly on her target, and Kate Clark headed the ball into the net. On another kick by Krissy, Andrea Behrer put the ball into the back of the net. To finish off the scoring blitz, Jamie Talarico received a perfectly weighted pass from Michelle Behrer to slam it into the net, never giving the keeper a chance to make a save. The final score was Goshen 4, Monticello 1.
