Goshen — The Goshen girls’ varsity soccer team had a very productive week. The players traveled north to face Valley Central on Monday. The Gladiators’ relentless offense scored two goals in the first six minutes of the game. The leading scorers were Erin Ortiz and Kelly Stephens with two goals and one assist each, followed by Rachel Jordan and Emily Lavell, each scoring an additional goal. Rachel Jordan is the Gladiators’ new sophomore fullback, scoring her first goal for the team. As always, the tight Gladiator defense staved off numerous attempts at the goal. Kate Clark, the backbone of the defense along with Carly Jung, Ria Chionchio, Adriana Capelli. and Siobhan Krutki, the ever-reliable and experienced defensive midfielder, anticipated many of the attacks on the goal, stepping in to regain possession of the ball to feed it to the offensive line. The final score was Goshen 6, Valley Central 2. Later in the week, the Lady Gladiators traveled to Port Jervis for their first league game of the season. This was an important game for the Gladiators as last year they went into overtime to be defeated by the Port. Once again, Erin Ortiz scored in the first minutes of the game with an assist from Kelly Stephens. Erin would continue her goal-scoring streak to score three more goals with assists from Michele Behrer and Krissy Pereira. Arielle Goyzueta and Carly Jung each scored their first goals of the season with assists from the experienced midfielder and captain, Krissy Pereira. Emily Lavell and Kelly Mallard played outside striking midfielders, putting constant pressure on Port to unsettle the keeper and creating many breakaway opportunities for the center striker. The defense, led by Kate Clark, Carly Jung, Rachel Jordan, and Adriana Capelli, completely shut down Port’s offense. The final score was 6-0. The Gladiators’ new freshman keeper, Kathleen Payne, is credited with three shut-outs to date. The team’s coach is Bob McIntee. Jessica Weir is the assistant coach.
