Goshen Boys' Modified Soccer completes another undefeated season

Goshen The C.J. Hooker Middle School Boys Soccer team finished another season without any losses. The team’s record this year was 10 wins, no losses and two ties. This marks another year that the team has not sustained any defeats. A little research has indicated the team has not lost a game in this millennium! Mr. Deirmeir, who coached the team prior to Mr. Guarneiri, believes the team lost a game in his first year of coaching versus Minisink, but that was seven years ago. Since then the team has usually defeated most opponents or had an occasional tie. This year they tied Warwick 3-3, and Cornwall 2-2, and defeated all others. The strength of this program is a superb feeder system and a tremendous commitment by both the players and their families to the game of soccer. Many of the players compete in “travel” soccer throughout the year and attend soccer camps over the summer. The team is made up of 26 players, which is a combination of 7 and 8 graders. The skill level the players come to the team with is outstanding and generally superior to the opposition. Selecting the team is always very difficult, as players who are quite skilled and talented may not make the team due to the limited number of spots on the team. This years team was led by captains Doug Finkelstein, Brennan Dzierzek, Joe Fini, Michael Wright and Frank Winski. Dzierzek was the leading offensive player scoring 6 goals and leading the team with 10 assists. Chase Bouchard, a talented and always hustling 7 grader tallied 7 goals and 8 assists. Frank Winski used a strong left foot from his midfield position to notch 6 goals and 7 assists. Michael Wright was the leading goal scorer, netting 8 goals and chipping in with 3 assists. Kenny Anderson contributed 5 goals and 3 assists. Doug Finkelstein, who played goalie the majority of the season, was used as a field player for the last few games to take advantage of his outstanding athletic ability, managed 4 goals and 3 assists. Doug scored 3 goals in the season finale against Valley Central. Steven Lombardo contributed 7 goals, Devon Kish had 2 goals and 3 assists, Kyle lazzetti netted 4 goals and Ryan Winski managed 1 goal and 3 assists after coming back from an early season injury that kept him out of action for several games. Other offensive contributors’ include: Paul Degan, 2 goals and 1 assist, Matt Mungo, 1 goal and 1 assist, Steven Dorian, 1 assist, Justin Lavell 1 goal, Brendon Millich, 1 assist, Kevin Murphy, 1 goal, and Kyle Somers, 1 assist. Defensively the team was anchored by stoppers Kevin Murphy and Teddy Schaefer, sweepers Joe Fini and Jared Lisack and outside defensive backs Dylan Begany, Frank Marsiglio, Chase Bowen, Steven Dorian, Matt Mungo, and C.J. Donovan. Bart DeProspo was also a major contributor from his midfield position, as well as goalie/defensive back Jeff Florkowski, who filled in admirably for Finkelstein when he came out of the goal. Overall, the team completed another tremendous season, playing with great heart and determination and continuing a long and proud tradition of winning Gladiator Soccer.
