Goshen Boys JV Soccer finishes season with 14-3 record
Goshen The Goshen Boys Junior Varsity Soccer team finished the 2006 season with a 14-3 record by recording wins over Minisink Valley, Pine Bush No. 2, Cornwall, and Warwick. The wins over Cornwall and Warwick were separated by a crushing 2-1 loss to Newburgh after a controversial penalty kick was awarded with 4 minutes left in the second overtime. Goshen opened the latter portion of their season with a solid 4-0 win over Minisink Valley, Chris Meaney scored a pair of goals, with Kyle Borisewich and Dan Esposito each adding one. Good offensive presence was also provided by Matthew Delia Vechia and Kyle Burnett from the forward positions. Assists were provided Borisewich, Atticus DeProspo, and Andy Papadimitropolous, and Men-of-the-Match Robert Dolney and Ryan Leone played superb sweeper-back and midfield positions, respectively, to preserve the shutout. The JV squad then played a tough Pine Bush No. 2 squad for a second time, winning 5-0. Leading scorer for the season Chris Meaney again added two goals, with additional goals coming from Kyle Borisewich, Matt Kaufman, and Kyle Burnett. Burnett and Kaufman each added assists, as did Jeff Pennings and Alex Finkelslein. Keepers Chad Unger and Kyle Birdsall, and marking backs Kenny Kelly, Richard Long, Justin Lawrence, and Ernest Tietjen combined to maintain the shutout, Goshen’s eighth of the season. Robert Dolney again displayed excellent leadership skills from the sweeper position to guide Goshen to a 5-0 win over Cornwall, after a first half that saw Goshen ahead by only a single goal. This time, Kyle Borisewich scored a brace, and Alex Finkelstein, Chris Meaney, and Andrew Laskaris each scored a goal apiece. Finkelstein also added two assists in a very well rounded game. Additional work in the midfield was provided by Kevin Alders, Conor Burnett, Anthony Vallone, and J.J. McLoughlin to keep pressure on a very well disciplined Cornwall defense. In their penultimate game of the season, Goshen suffered a heart-breaking 2-1 loss to Newburgh on a late controversial call. After 95 minutes of soccer, and at the end of the second overtime period, a late spot-kick awarded to Newburgh was difference in the most entertaining and balanced game Goshen had this season. The defense of Dolney, Tietjen, Long, Lawrence, Kelly, and Ryan Dunnigan played admirably throughout, with Goshen’s lone goal coming from a tremendous finish by Jeff Pennings off of an excellent cross by Atticus DeProspo, who with Kevin Alders in midfield played very well for 8th graders moved up to the JV squad at the beginning of the season. Goshen regrouped to come back and get by a tough Warwick team by a score of 3-2. After a first half that saw the teams tied 2-2, Chris Meaney was able to put Goshen ahead in the second period, and the defense was able to hold off numerous advances by Warwick to hold onto a well-earned victory. In sum, the Goshen Boys JV Soccer Team was able to finish the season with a 14-3 record, while scoring 73 goals and only allowing 16, which results in less than a goal-a-game against average for Keepers Kyle Birdsall and Chad Unger. The boys and coach would like to thank their parents, the Goshen Soccer Club Parents Association, Athletic Director Robert Siracuse, Varsity coaches Mike Kelly and Matt Quick for their support throughout the season, and Goshen Central School District’s Transportation and Building and Grounds Department for providing transit to and from games and such excellent playing conditions at Mount Olympus.
