MAMMOTH MOUNTAIN, CALIF. — Kei Kullberg of Cornwall, who began skiing at Mount Peter Ski Area when he was three, won the giant slalom at the Junior National Champion on March 8 at Mammoth Mountain, Calif.

Kullberg, who is now 17, represented the National Sports Academy at Lake Placid during the competition.

Two years after starting to ski, Kullberg, then 5, started competing in Mount Peter’s race program with his father Karl as his coach. He continued racing at Mount Peter until he was 14, when he was offered an opportunity to go to school full time for ski racing and high school at the National Sports Academy in Lake Placid. The young athlete will be graduating from NSA in June and will be attending college in the fall, although he is undecided in his choice.

“It was a mind set I’ve never been in before,” Kullberg said in the press release announcing his victory. “I’ve never wanted something so bad and thank you so much to all of my sponsors and supporters to allow me the opportunity to get to this moment.”

And it began on the slopes of Mount Peter Ski Area.
