Fire remains stoked in season opener

Warwick - Warwick Fire, the Hudson Valley Youth Soccer League’s U11 Division 1 Boys team, began the 2006 season as they left off in 2005 with a convincing 7-1 win last Sunday over perennial rivals Florida. “We worked hard during the winter season playing indoor tournaments and the results are there to be seen,” said coach Tony Blomfield. “With the New York Red Bulls (formerly the MetroStars) coaching staff in place to provide the Fire with professional training, we believe we are on the right track.” In the season opener, played on a temporary field at Warwick Town Park, the Fire started strongly with most of the early play confined to the Florida half. An early penalty saw Nick Blomfield take the lead for the Fire and there was no looking back. Florida fought bravely and had opportunities, particularly in the second half, but all but most attempts on goal were easily deflected by keeper Matt Unick. Two more goals by Blomfield and goals by Nick Daigle, Michael Bedross, Gregory Snigur and Phillip Goska gave the Fire a convincing win. The Fire will play their next game at home on Sunday, April 23, at noon.
