Warwick - The energy of the U12B Warwick Fire was as strong as the winds at the Warwick soccer fields this past Sunday. The Fire defeated the Highland Scorpions 7-0 to hold onto first place. The Fire started strong and stayed that way throughout the game with defenders and midfielders insuring that goalie Matt Unick rarely touched the ball. Goals were spread evenly amongst six of the Fire forwards and midfielders. The excitement started when Mike Bedross worked the ball down the line, slipping a pass to Nick Daigle who then crossed the ball low and hard into the six-yard box. Forward Brian Allan slammed a tremendous volley into the net for first goal of the match. Soon after, on a pass from fullback Conner Reynolds, Phil Goska cut in from the left and hit one of his trademark shots high and hard into the corner of the Highland net. Pressure from the Fire was unrelenting. Midfielder Nick Blomfield added to his tally this year, scoring from outside the eighteen-yard box, followed by Bedross, who tipped the ball into the net after a scramble in front of the Highland goal. At the halftime whistle, the Fire lead 4-0. Picking up where they left off, Fire forward Goska netted his second goal of the day and on a corner kick, Ryan Killeen blew past the Highland defense to make the score 6-0. The final goal of the game came when Blomfield slipped the ball to midfielder Anthony Mann, who scored his first goal as a Fire player. The Fire plays next Sunday at Red Hook with a noon kick-off.
