Warwick - Last Sunday, May 21, started out as a beautiful morning with Warwick preparing for the Duck Derby. By mid-day, when the Warwick Fire met Newburgh’s FC Real, only the ducks were happy. The Fire came on strong in the first half and kept the ball active in the Real half of the pitch. Phillip Goska, Brian Allan, Nick Blomfield and defender Ryan Stirt all had excellent shots on goal, only to see them hit the post, deflected by the keeper and or land just wide of the net. The Real got their chance for a goal with a direct kick after a pushing call was made, and scored on a corner ball, just out of reach of the goalie. The Fire answered back on a corner kick from Nick Blomfield, which was “chested” in by Phillip Goska for a goal. The Fire’s offense kept the ball in the Real half with teamwork and a great cross from Michael Bedross and a shot from Ryan Killeen, who scored Warwick’s second goal. Nicholas Daigle had a terrific shot, that again bounced off the corner post. At the half, the score was Warwick, 2, Newburgh, 1. After the break, the skies opened, the wind whipped across the field and both teams got soaked. Newburgh took a corner kick, which was saved by Warwick’s goalie. Unfortunately, Newburgh’s next attempt was out of reach of Jamie Eigo and placed perfectly in the left corner pocket of the net. Fire tried desperately to break the tie, but Newburgh got there first with a high shot over the head of Eigo. Warwick tried to move the ball to the Real net, but time ran out. The final score was Newburgh 3, Warwick 2. Information for this article was provided by Pam Eigo.
