Division champs Spartans keep on rolling with two more wins
Florida - Having already clinched the Division V of the OCL, the Seward Spartans notched two more league victories on the last week of the regular season. Coach Bill Steele’s team will take a 15-0-2 (7-0-1 OCL) record into the upcoming Section 9 Tournament. On Monday at Tri-Valley the Spartans had an easy time in downing the Bears 5-1. Spartan keeper Wayne Hallock was only called upon to make three saves; Tri-Valley’s Fred Moore was busy making twenty, indicating the Spartan domination. Florida’s duo-scoring combination, Bryan Folkl and Rich Nozkowski, led the way, each booting home one goal and assisting on two others. Other goals were scored by Mike Augustyn, Dylan Gaucher and Steve Sinisi. At home on Wednesday on a frigid playing field, the Spartans closed out their regular season with a 4-0 blanking of the Fallsburg Comets. Three first-half goals, two by Folkl and one by Corey deJong, gave the Spartans all the goals they would need. Chris Slesinski earned the assist on Folkl’s first goal; Folkl’s second goal was unassisted, simply meaning he made another one of his bull-like rushes through the opposition. Nozkowski was credited with the assist on deJong’s goal. Early in the second half, Folkl broke through the right side again and shuffled a pass to deJong who ended the scoring. Hallock came up with five saves to record the shutout. Brenden Myers, Saddam Sahmanovic, Mickey Collins and the rest of the defense did a good job in keeping the ball away from the goal area. Both the offense and the defense will have to continue their solid play if the undefeated Spartans hope to go deep into the Sectionals and the state tournament.
