Monroe — Alex Crespo, a senior at Monroe-Woodbury High School, achieved a major goal in February when he verbally committed to play baseball for the Lafayette College Leopards. On March 3, Crespo signed his acceptance letter. He will also sign a letter of intent during the April NCAA signing period. Lafayette, located in Easton, Pa., competes in the Division I Patriot League, along with Army, Bucknell, Holy Cross, Lehigh, and Navy. The Leopards are headed by Coach Joe Kinney. While at Lafayette, Crespo will major in biology and pursue a career in medicine. He worked hard to extend his baseball career beyond high school - in the classroom, at home, at school, at the gym, and at Frozen Ropes, an indoor baseball training facility. The work paid off with invitations to showcases and camps. His performances garnered attention from over thirty college coaches, including Kinney, who first saw Crespo at a Virginia showcase camp in July of 2005. Crespo was a perennial honor roll student at Monroe-Woodbury High School, while taking the most challenging curriculum offered. He scored over 1400 on the old SAT, and over 2000 on the new SAT. As a junior last season, he batted .417, and led the Crusaders Varsity in many categories while holding down third base. This year, he will lead the Crusaders along with his best friend, Chris Nieves, who will play Division I Baseball at Fairfield University in Connecticut.
