WARWICK — On Thursday evening, Aug. 30, hundreds of guests and members of Warwick Youth Football and Cheer Leading, a volunteer-run league, participated in a pep rally held at Veterans Memorial Park. There are 240 boys and girls from Warwick, Florida and Greenwood Lake in the league.
Thanks to a contribution by Warwick Valley Telephone (WVT), the league’s annual season kick-off event was also an opportunity to unveil a brand new scoreboard. To thank Warwick Valley Telephone for its help with the purchase, league officials held a formal ribbon cutting ceremony at the scoreboard with WVT executives.
The pep rally, which ran for almost four hours, included D3 cheerleaders playing football while D3 football players cheered, a dunk tank where coaches were dunked, raffle baskets, face painting, and the opening of the concession stand for the season.
Boss Hawgs Backyard Smokers served pulled pork and brisket.
The emcee and game announcer for the event was Brad Widulski.
During the opening ceremonies, Brian Perez, president of Warwick Youth Football and Cheer Leading, introduced the teams, while pointing out their achievements. He welcomed visitors and also introduced the WVT executives, the coaches and guest speaker Mayor Michael Newhard.
“We have an extraordinary partnership here,” said Newhard. “And an extraordinary community.”
The mayor also praised the new scoreboard. “Next we will have to build a stadium,” he laughed.
Games began Labor Day weekend, and the season runs through mid-November with towns competing against each other, ending in a Super Bowl for each division.
Last year’s D2 Gold Football team won the Superbowl in their division. League cheerleaders may also try out to compete against other towns in cheerleading competitions. The season runs November through March.
