After loss to Burke,Spartans head to sectionals
Goshen - It didn’t snow last Tuesday night in Goshen, but it did rain. No, not raindrops, but three-pointers by John S. Burke Catholic against the Seward Spartans. Those 16 three’s powered the Eagles to a 71-45 non-league win against the sodden Spartans. It wasn’t that Florida played that poorly, it was just that Burke had their hottest hand of the season. That shooting vaulted them to a 19-12 first-quarter lead. While the Spartans could only manage 10 points in the second quarter, the Eagles were scoring an even 20 to take a commanding 39-22 half-time lead. There was more of the same in the second half. Wayne Hallock gave the Spartans a lift off the bench in the last quarter, and Brenden Myers scored all five of his points in the final stanza. But it proved to be too little, too late. Bryan Folkl led the Spartans with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Mickey Collins and Saddam Sahmanovic each hit double figures with ten apiece. Both teams go their own way now as the Spartans chase a Class C title in the Section 9 Tournament. The Eagles will attempt to capture the sectional crown in B.
